| PETA Protest Brings Out Red Neck Redding | ||||||||||||||
| March 19, 2009 It seemed that conservative Redding didn't show up to protest PETA today at the intersection of Tehama and Market Street. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) set up camp for an hour to pass out literature, and raise awareness about animal suffering. PETA used a live sculpture sign to draw attention to their cause, which includes a nude painted model.
The PETA Girls Arrive in Redding. I heard no complaints about the nude model, but a few complaints about PETA. Although Redding conservatives did not show up to protest the nude model, redneck Redding did show up to insist on exercising their right to shoot and eat animals.
Redding Protesters don't think very highly of PETA. Jena Hunt, Campaign Coordinator for the Redding protest is from San Francisco. I asked a few questions of Jena and recorded it into the following interview: norcalbeat - "PETA seems to primarily be a lobby group before congress, will you extend that someday to include early childhood education?" Jena - "We already are doing that with outreach and denouncing the idea that you have to eat meat to be healthy." norcalbeat - Why did you choose the snake as the paint theme? Jena - Alligators, lizards, snakes are usually skinned alive when they are used for products. All animals feel pain just like we do." norcalbeat - "You have a nude model, and therefore a lot of interest from guys, what's the best line you've heard today, did any of them make you laugh." Jena - "People eating tasty animals" makes us laugh, but at the people, not at what they are saying. "We try to change their minds."
